We caught up with Hema Peri, a ‘jack of all trades’ at Octopus Hospitality, and learned about her great personal mantra, her highlights working for Octopus, and much more! Get to know Hema with this week’s staff profile.

Roles: Food Service Assistant, Food & Beverage Attendant, Catering Assistant and Kitchen Assistant


How long have you worked for Octopus Hospitality?

I’ve worked at Octopus for one year and three months.


How would you describe your experience working for Octopus Hospitality?

I am immensely happy with my experience working for Octopus, and I would consider it to be one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve worked at various other places and had mediocre experiences, but with Octopus I enjoy every location and setting that I work at. It has been a pleasure working with Octopus.


What is one of your highlights while working for Octopus Hospitality?

I have a lot of highlights! I think the main highlight is that every place I work at is always happy with my work. I always enjoy every place I work at, and I find that there are always new skills that I can take away from each job. By picking up new habits from good work environments, it has made me a better person and improved my skills.


Where did you grow up?

I grew up in India. I’ve lived in Melbourne for one and a half years now.


Where is your favourite place in the world?

I would narrow it down to Paris and London. I grew up listening to stories about love and romance in Paris. Additionally, I have a lot of family living in London, and I would like to grow old there.


What are you passionate about?

I’m most passionate about singing and dancing. When I was living in India I was in a band. I still sing while in Australia (mostly Indian/Bollywood), but I would like to do more.

I’m also passionate about living in Australia. I really wanted to see and live in Australia, plus I love cricket. I can’t wait to see the next World Cup in 2019!


What is the coolest thing you’re working on right now?

I am currently studying to get my Masters in Information Technology (IT). So, the main thing I’m working on right now is finding a full-time job in the field. I graduate in a few months, so I’ve been focused on that lately.


If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I really want to learn to be a great cook. I want to be able to have family and friends over to serve them delicious dishes I’ve cooked, and for them to tell me that I’m a great cook. It’s a life skill, so it will take some time to build up.

Some of my favourite dishes to cook are from Indian recipes, such as Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikki Masala, and other official Indian dishes.


What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my family. They are always there for me, and they always have my back. I definitely miss them right now!


What words or personal mantra do you live by?

I am a person who perceives everyone as a role model. Everyone has their own speciality. Each day, I try to learn something unique from everyone, whether it’s from my parents, film stars, cooking stars, chefs, et cetera. I find everyone unique and special, so there is always something new I can learn from them.
