We had the pleasure of chatting with Marcus Harrop, one of our Chefs, to learn a bit about him, a few of his favourite things, and his experience as a Chef.

What is your favourite food to eat?
What is your favourite food to cook?
That’s a tough one…I’d have to say slow cooked food.
Where did you grow up?
It’s a bit complex. I was born in East Melbourne. When I was 6 months old my family moved to Tokyo, Japan, where I attended kindergarten. At 5 years of age, we moved back to Melbourne and lived in South Yarra. After a few years my parents bought a farm in Morton, so I mainly grew up there.
What is your favourite footy team?
What do you like to do in your spare time? What are some of your hobbies?
Right now, most of my time is spent on building a new house. Some of my hobbies are cricket, horse racing, and skiing. I also own a greyhound.
If you could live in any city, where would you live?
I would live in Zermatt, Switzerland. I love skiing so it would be an ideal place for me to live and be able to go skiing!
What is your favourite part of being a Chef?
What I like about being a Chef for Octopus Hospitality, specifically, is the variety of places that I get to go to to work. Recently, for the past several months, I’ve been working at the same location and I’ve been happy with the security of working at one place consistently.

What is your favourite restaurant in Melbourne?
It’s difficult to choose just one…but I would say Kenzan Japanese Restaurant in the CBD.
What inspires you?
Kitchen brigades outperforming because of teamwork.
Do you have a personal motto or mantra?
Keep calm and carry on.
What is your biggest achievement to date
(personal or professional)?
Getting this far in life, as well as overcoming 5 bowel
surgeries over the span of 18 months.
If you could only drink one beer for the rest of
your life, what would it be?
